TIE 575 21st Century Literacy

What do you consider the most important aspect of 21st Century Literacy?

I think the most important component of 21st Century Literacy is inquiry based. When people are allowed to explore and discover and have a hands on experience that creates a learning opportunity that will increase critical thinking and build on problem solving capabilities that as a result will filter into real life connection. With 21st Century literacy students will learn to self assess, analyze and access to solve problems. 21st Century Literacy will teach through means of multi media and project based learning that will implement various subjects. 21st Century literacy is the new way of creating lifelong learners.Inquiry based learning is the most important aspect of 21st century because it allows students to analyze, access, and assess through media and critical thinking and problem solving.

  1. Inquiry based learning is extremely important for the 21st century. After so many years of skills based teaching students have to be encouraged to ask questions and explore so that we can help develop those scientists and inventors, writers and creators and not just individuals who can read and do math in order to pass standardized tests.

  2. I think that inquiry based learning has always existed so I don't necessarily think it's a 21st century skill. Nevertheless, the way in which students are now empowered to be able to figure out problems with little help from adults is quite a change from past centuries. It's dumbfounding to think about how students could only look for "answers" by reading books or asking adults. Those were their main avenues to knowledge. (On an aside, my students have a hard time understanding what exactly an encyclopedia is. I tell them that it's like the internet, before the internet existed...in a book format.) Inquiry-based learning in the 21st century means being able to parse through all the data to find exactly what you are looking for. In previous decades it was just the opposite, you tried to find as much data as possible.
